St Bede's Catholic Church
St Bede's Catholic Church located at 26 King Street, Appin was designed by Father Therry in 1837. It is the oldest Catholic Church on mainland Australia. Inspection of the stonework indicates that different tradesmen built the church in stages. It has a slate roof and iron roofed square tower, which once had a timber belfry.
St Bede's has an inscription carved over the entrance that reads "J.P. EPUS A.D. 1841".
The Cemetery associated with the church has many historic headstones.
The Fahey family were early settlers in Appin and used the church extensively for baptisms, weddings, funerals and burials.
Research undertaken to identify those members (and their graves) of the Fahey Family Tree associated with the six brothers who arrived in Sydney on 7 September 1841 and who are buried in the cemetery of St Bede’s Catholic Church in Appin, NSW produced a list of 24 such family members.
The research used the Australian Cemeteries Index (ACI) by searching for “Fahey” in the Name and “Appin” as the Cemetery name.
The resulting research paper and attachments centres on 24 family members.
